NYAD

“Nyad” es una correcta película sobre logros deportivos, superaciones personales y lecciones vitales que presenta, como principal mérito, unos personajes muy bien construidos en el guion y excelentemente interpretados por dos grandes actrices y, como posible punto débil, una trama algo monótona centrada en la natación que, de no compartir tal afición, puede resultar algo repetitiva. En todo caso, la balanza se inclina claramente a favor de este largometraje, que se puede ver en la plataforma “Netflix” desde el pasado viernes.

Basado en una historia real, cuenta la vida de Diana Nyad, quien desde niña destacó nadando, compitiendo y estableciendo records en el agua. En su momento decidió ir a nado desde Florida hasta Cuba, pero fracasó en el intento y abandonó su especialidad para dedicarse al periodismo deportivo. Sin embargo, al cumplir sesenta años se propone abordar el mismo desafío, generando así la desaprobación y el rechazo de su entorno más próximo. No obstante, la suma de su carácter y de su empeño terminan por arrastrar a un séquito de colaboradores para lograr su objetivo. Cumplidos los sesenta y cuatro años, y tras varias tentativas insatisfactorias, culminará finalmente su ansiada travesía de casi ciento ochenta kilómetros desde el país caribeño hasta la península estadounidense.

Se sitúa detrás de la cámara la pareja sentimental y profesional formada por Jimmy Chin y Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, hasta ahora dedicados al rodaje de documentales vinculados mayoritariamente a hazañas deportivas. Ambos ganaron en 2019 el Oscar al mejor documental por “Free Solo”, protagonizado por el primer escalador en solitario de una pared rocosa en Yosemite, sin cuerdas y sin equipo de seguridad. Por lo tanto, su pasión se centra en los retos humanos que comportan altos riesgos y en las experiencias extremas, si bien en este debut en la ficción demuestran poseer una notable habilidad narrativa y un correcto manejo del ritmo.

El eje central, el verdadero motor de este proyecto, se sostiene sobre sus protagonistas, dos mujeres luchando con dignidad en plena crisis de los sesenta que, aunque no pueden ser más diferentes, se profesan un afecto verdadero. Una, campeona, popular, con un gran ego y una forma de ser complicada, habla continuamente de sí misma y de sus éxitos, empeñada en vivir sin que su edad la limite. La otra, entrenadora, discreta, entregada al prójimo y alejada de todo protagonismo, sirve de complemento, apoyo y sostén a la primera.

La cinta dispone de varias escenas con notables diálogos y atesora algunas reflexiones existenciales a las que merece la pena prestar atención. Tal vez, por estar basada en hechos reales y saberse ya su desenlace, pierda cierta dosis de tensión e intriga, pero tal circunstancia se compensa sobradamente con el carisma de ambos perfiles humanos, y el metraje de dos horas da lugar a un visionado positivo y vitalista muy de agradecer.

Unas maravillosas Annette Bening y Jodie Foster consiguen mi reverencia. Foster, pese a interpretar un papel más secundario, acredita una mayor relevancia gracias a su buen hacer. Ganadora de dos Oscars por sus actuaciones en “Acusados” y en la mítica “El silencio de los corderos”, se alza como una intérprete de referencia, de las mejores que yo haya visto nunca en la gran pantalla. Desde que deslumbró en “Taxi Driver” a mitad de la década de los setenta, su ejemplar trayectoria profesional acumula interpretaciones impecables. Bening, por su parte, si sitúa igualmente a la altura y su labor no muestra ningún pero a pesar de su complejidad, ejerciéndola con aparente facilidad. A mi juicio, deberían integrar las candidaturas a las actuaciones femeninas más relevantes de la temporada. Les acompaña el solvente actor y músico británico  Rhys Ifans (“Notting Hill”, “The Amazing Spider-Man”).
