DECISION TO LEAVE

Aunque para un gran número de personas la pujanza del cine surcoreano se inicia con la cinta “Parásitos”, que logró la insólita hazaña de alzarse con el Oscar a la mejor película en el año 2020, es preciso remontarse mucho más atrás en el tiempo. Así, entre los directores que han situado a Corea del Sur en el mapa cinematográfico mundial, se halla sin duda Park Chan-wook. Ganador del BAFTA británico, de un premio en el Festival de Cine de Berlín y de tres más en los certámenes de Cannes y Venecia, conforma una filmografía singular y característica que merece ser estudiada. Empezó a destacar con “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”, si bien fue en 2003, gracias a “Old Boy”, cuando recibió un aluvión de galardones y reconocimientos, resultando dicho largometraje copiado y readaptado posteriormente. Demostró su versatilidad en “La doncella” e, incluso, pudimos disfrutar de su buen hacer en la serie de televisión “La chica del tambor”. Ahora estrena “Decision to Leave”, una pequeña joya que me ha gustado mucho por su cautivadora manera de contar una historia, tal vez muy trillada, pero que el cineasta revitaliza visualmente, dando lugar a una excepción atrayente y hasta excitante.

Más allá de esa aureola de exotismo que acompaña a lo oriental, su color, ritmo y estilo narrativo sitúan al espectador ante una propuesta original en la forma, pero reconocible en el fondo. La insólita combinación entre “thriller”, sensualidad y romanticismo se adorna con el sello propio de Chan-wook y se engalana con varias referencias a otros filmes. De hecho, no esconde la influencia del maestro Alfred Hitchcock, aunque la inspiración del realizador va más allá, ofreciendo planos que rememoran títulos como “El amante”, de Jean-Jacques Annaud, y creando atmósferas que recuerdan a “Perdición”, de Billy Wilder o, por supuesto, “Vértigo”, del propio Hitchcock. Refleja, pues, en pantalla una propuesta nueva, fresca y actual, cuyo visionado aúna lo mejor de la melancolía del pasado con lo mejor de una rompedora modernidad. No obstante, se disfrutará en mayor medida si se dispone de cierta cultura sobre el Séptimo Arte.  

Un experimentado y meticuloso detective investiga la sospechosa muerte de un hombre en la cima de una montaña. Pronto conjetura sobre la implicación de la esposa del fallecido y, a medida que avanza en la investigación, comienza a sentirse irremediablemente atraído por el magnetismo que desprende la joven. “Decision to Leave” resulta, a la par, elegante y contundente, entretenida y reflexiva. Sin duda, una de las mejores obras del año. No en vano cuenta ya con una candidatura a los Globos de Oro (mejor film de habla no inglesa), dos nominaciones a los BAFTA (mejor dirección y mejor película de habla no inglesa) y un premio en el reciente Festival de Cine de Cannes, entre otros.

El talentoso modo de jugar con la cámara, mimar la fotografía y configurar las secuencias para crear la trama, hacen de este trabajo de Park Chan-wook una cautivadora rareza dentro de la cartelera de los últimos doce meses.

Los integrantes del equipo artístico, desconocidos para el gran público, actúan con acierto. Park Hae-il participó en “The Host” y “Memories of Murder”, ambas de Bong Joon Ho, artífice de “Parásitos”. A la especialmente destacada Tang Wei la vimos en “Deseo, peligro”, de Ang Lee y en la norteamericana “Blackhat - Amenaza en la red”, de Michael Mann. Ambos forman una notable pareja que potencia con sus interpretaciones la labor del realizador surcoreano.

Por desgracia, este tipo de films disponen de una distribución comercial muy limitada y recalan en escasas salas de proyección. Al menos, se ha estrenado en Tenerife casi simbólicamente, no como otros. Pienso, por ejemplo, en “Aftersun”, ópera prima de Charlotte Wells que, pese a estar acaparando distinciones, ha quedado al margen de la distribución en numerosas provincias, incrementando tristemente el listado de interesantes propuestas que se quedan por el camino sin ser exhibidas.
