LA SOCIEDAD DE LA NIEVE

Juan Antonio Bayona es un buen director de cine que sabe cómo contar historias por medio del lenguaje cinematográfico. Porque, aunque parezca mentira, no todos los cineastas saben hacerlo. Se inició en la profesión a través del género de terror con “El orfanato” y dio el salto a la industria internacional con una de las entregas de la saga “Jurassic World”. Ninguno de ambos títulos me interesó demasiado, pero sí el resto de su filmografía, que le acredita como un realizador capaz, honesto y hábil con los relatos complejos y emotivos. Sus trabajos en “Lo imposible”, “Un monstruo viene a verme” y, ahora, “La sociedad de la nieve” demuestran que se desenvuelve bien tanto en las cuestiones técnicas como en las artísticas, logrando narraciones coherentes y sólidas. Hasta la fecha, y a la espera de posteriores entregas de premios, ha ganado dos Goyas como mejor director.

El principal problema de “La sociedad de la nieve” estriba en el conocimiento previo de su trama, respecto de la que ya se han rodado más películas y documentales, perdiéndose de ese modo parte de su frescura y emoción. En el año 1993 acudí a las salas de proyección a ver “¡Viven!”, de Frank Marshall, (protagonizada por un joven Ethan Hawke y que, en su versión original, contaba con la voz de John Malkovich como narrador), y la sensación de estar contemplando lo mismo me ha acompañado en varios tramos del metraje.

Además, su extensa duración, próxima a las dos horas y media, aunque resulta adecuada para describir la magnitud de la tragedia durante los meses transcurridos entre el accidente aéreo y el rescate, provoca cierto hartazgo a causa de la acumulación de penurias y la reiteración de la lucha contra el frío y el hambre de los supervivientes. Al margen de estas consideraciones, la cinta combina con destreza el drama, la emoción, la debilidad, la resistencia y la superación de unos hechos reales que, en su momento, conformaron una de las noticias más relevantes de su época.

A finales de 1972, un vuelo de la Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya, fletado para trasladar a un equipo de rugby a Chile, se estrella en un glaciar en el corazón de los Andes. En un principio, tan sólo veintinueve de sus cuarenta y cinco pasajeros sobreviven al accidente. Atrapados en uno de los entornos más inaccesibles y hostiles del planeta, se ven obligados a recurrir a medidas extremas para mantenerse con vida. Algunos no lo consiguen y, pese a resistir al impacto de la nave, no superan las condiciones climáticas ni las carencias del inhóspito lugar. Ante semejante tesitura, los más fuertes inician un camino a pie en busca de ayuda.

El film ha optado al galardón a mejor película de habla no inglesa en los Globos de Oro, que finalmente ha ido a parar a la francesa “Anatomía de una caída”,        y acumula trece candidaturas en la inminente edición de los Goya, incluyendo película y dirección. Asimismo, ha sido la designada por la Academia de Cine español para representar a nuestro país en los Oscar de Hollywood. Se trata de una obra muy cuidada, no sólo en el aspecto interpretativo, sino también en su presentación visual. Y, pese a la barbarie de las vivencias que refleja, se alza como un largometraje bonito y emotivo, constituyendo una digna representación de nuestra cinematografía.

Si bien el elenco de actores apenas se conoce, llevan a cabo sus actuaciones de manera creíble y adaptada a la tragedia vivida. Entre los diversos reconocimientos recibidos por “La sociedad de la nieve”, figura la labor de Michael Giacchino, compositor de la banda sonora. Ganador de la icónica estatuilla dorada por la música de “Up”, ha compuesto melodías para la factoría Pixar, “Rogue One: Una historia de Star Wars”, “The Batman” o “Star Trek: Más allá”. Con esta colaboración para J.A. Bayona aspira a los Critics Choice Awards, los Satellite Awards y los Premios Goya, habiendo sido galardonado en los Hollywood Music In Media Awards.
