ROBERT REDFORD, IN MEMORIAM

Hoy se ha conocido la triste noticia del fallecimiento de Robert Redford a los 89 años en su casa de Provo, en Utah, según ha informado el diario estadounidense The New York Times. Redford ha sido sin duda una de las grandes estrellas de la historia del cine. Charles Robert Redford Jr. nació el 18 de agosto de 1936 en Santa Mónica, California (Estados Unidos). 

Debutó en el cine en el año 1962 aunque logró el éxito mundial a finales de esa década con películas como “Dos hombres y un destino”. Toda la década de los setenta fue propicia para Redford. Films como “Tal como éramos”, “El golpe”, “El gran Gatsby”, “Los tres días del cóndor” o “Todos los hombres del presidente” lo encumbraron como un magnífico actor apreciado por el público. En los ochenta solo intervino en cuatro largometrajes, destacando por encima de todos “Memorias de África”. A partir de esa década empezó a combinar su faceta de actor con la de director firmando títulos como “Gente corriente”, “El rio de la vida”, “Quiz show: el dilema”, “La leyenda de Bagger Vance” o la más reciente “Leones por corderos”. 

Redford creó en 1980 un centro de enseñanza para jóvenes cineastas, el Instituto Sundance, en sus terrenos de Utah. Llevó adelante esta empresa a pesar de no encontrar apoyos. Su instituto subvenciona a nuevas promesas del cine. Ante la calidad de los trabajos decidió crear un festival de cine paralelo para exponer los proyectos de los estudiantes que hoy se ha convertido en el festival de cine independiente más importante del mundo: el Festival de Cine de Sundance, que se celebra todos los eneros desde el 83 en Park City, Utah. 

Robert Redford ha ganado dos Oscar. Uno como director por “Gente corriente” y otro honorífico en el año 2002. Ha estado nominado en otras tres ocasiones como actor (“El golpe”) y como productor y director (“Quiz show: El dilema”). También ha logrado tres BAFTA británicos y varios Globos de oro. Es, sin duda, una de las figuras más emblemáticas e importantes de la historia del cine.

El cine ha sufrido una gran pérdida, pero nos quedan sus películas y su Festival de Cine.

NUNCA LLUEVE EN CALIFORNIA (Palm Trees and Power Lines)

Pese a que la cartelera se empeñe en demostrar lo contrario, el cine norteamericano actual se compone de algo más que sagas interminables y películas de superhéroes. Existen también al margen de las distribuidoras otras propuestas modestas que van a contracorriente y que ofrecen alternativas interesantes, aunque sin apenas opciones de llegar a un gran número de salas de proyección. El pasado fin de semana, coincidiendo con la décima entrega de “Fast & Furious” y la apuesta de Disney por “Ant-Man y la Avispa: Quantumanía”, la plataforma Filmin estrenaba “Nunca llueve en California”, traducción libre de “Palm Trees and Power Lines”, que logró cuatro nominaciones en los últimos “Film Independent Spirit Awards” (ópera prima, guion, actriz revelación y actor secundario) y que, además, arrancó numerosos aplausos en el Festival de Cine de Sundance, donde se alzó con el premio a la mejor dirección.

La cinta comienza de forma pausada, presentando a una adolescente desubicada que pierde el tiempo junto a un grupo de supuestos amigos con los que, en el fondo, no conecta. Vive con su madre, con quien mantiene una relación similar a la de cualquier compañera de piso, y termina liada con un hombre bastante mayor que ella, el único individuo que, al parecer, le presta atención y le trata bien. A medida que avanza el metraje, este, en principio, típico relato de realidades adolescentes, comienza a ahondar en los peligros de las relaciones dañinas y tóxicas para, posteriormente y de manera sorpresiva, tratar de modo certero el fenómeno de la explotación sexual.

El relato demuestra que no resulta necesario ser raptada en un país extranjero para terminar inmersa en una espiral nociva y autodestructiva y cómo, en ocasiones, por la vía más inocente e insospechada, es posible caer en redes que utilizan los cuerpos de las mujeres para lograr un rendimiento económico. Unas interpretaciones creíbles, unidas a diálogos y situaciones verosímiles reflejados a través de una narración honesta y con no pocos valores cinematográficos, dan como resultado un film que podría utilizarse como herramienta didáctica y educativa.

Su realizadora, Jamie Dack, debuta detrás de la cámara con este trabajo, si bien ya había rodado un cortometraje con el mismo título e idéntico argumento, de donde se deduce su interés por profundizar en el tema y convertirlo en largometraje. Los reconocimientos obtenidos en Sundance y en los Independent Spirit Awards evidencian su esperanzador comienzo en la profesión, confirmando que en el futuro de la industria norteamericana hay cantera y relevo, siempre y cuando las productoras se animen a darles una oportunidad.

Todas las actuaciones se desarrollan a un gran nivel y apuntalan notablemente los perfiles a su cargo. La actriz más conocida del reparto es Gretchen Mol, vista en la versión de James Mangold de “El tren de las 3:10”, “Rounders” de John Dahl o “Celebrity” y “Acordes y desacuerdos”, ambas de Woody Allen. Asume un papel secundario, pero efectivo.

No obstante, el verdadero peso de la historia recae en la debutante Lily McInerny, quien lleva a cabo una destacada labor. Gracias a la buena dirección de Dack, aporta a su personaje el necesario grado de profundidad y realismo. Desde ahora aguardo con interés sus nuevos proyectos. Encarna a su pareja en la ficción Jonathan Tucker (“Las vírgenes suicidas”, “Hostage”, “Los próximos tres días”). Confío en que finalmente se revierta la tendencia y no se releguen estas obras independientes a las plataformas, por el hecho de que el monopolio de exhibidoras y distribuidoras veten su estreno en las salas. El futuro del Séptimo Arte depende de ello.
